Correspondences
Correpondences is an ongoing decade-long collaboration traversing diverse geographies, histories, and natural environments. At its core, it transforms field recordings gathered by Soundwalk Collective’s founder Stephan Crasneanscki into immersive soundscapes—“sonic memories” of place shaped by poetic inspiration, historical resonance, and environmental urgency. In dialogue with these recordings, Patti Smith composes and performs texts that reflect on nature, human history, and artistic creation, while the project subverts conventional hierarchies by letting sound dictate image.
The exhibition format operates as a site-specific multi-channel video installation featuring eight films (111 minutes total) presented as a fully immersive image-and-sound environment, complemented by sculptural archival cabinets and material mindscapes (handwritten texts, photographs, objects, visual studies, and scientific data). Across its life, the project has also existed as live performances, screenings, poetry readings, and workshops in major institutions internationally.
